It truly was an Amazing Race
7801489483115455945 date: Tuesday, June 29, 2010 time: 10:42 PM comments: 0
Literally! We had less than 10meetings in total. Every Saturday morning, we were racing against time to complete whatever was on our agenda by 1pm, before 1 of the school attendants start hounding us to pack up and go.
comment?
The race itself was truly another challenge on its own, with the restriction of time, budget, shortage of cars for 1st recce, venue (tee up for Race day), lack of space for an ideal ending activity and closing, of course last but not least to keep the participants engaged, while keeping in mind of the intended objective. We had 2 recces throughout the planning stage. Only Mrs. Freeman, Clarice, Tania & I have seen all the venues twice. The rest of the team didn’t get a chance to see it more than once. On race day, as much as the participants were running around, finding their way to all 4 pit-stops, I too felt like our team was running our own internal race! Jessica & Choc, were hoping & praying hard that the vendor will come back in time before for the participants arrived at their station. I on the other hand was acting like a control station. Marking team names off as they arrive/depart each station. Yes, it meant that my phone was ringing non-stop! And guess what? Teams went missing! For a good 45mins Purple & Orange team didn’t check in to any station and I was trying to locate them. So the race ended and now it’s time to do the closing. Truth be told, I didn’t know how I was going to do the starting/closing. From day 1, way before we started planning, that was the only question that I had in mind. “How am I going to tee up & close?” The answer finally came when I was on my way back from a MAD Learning program, the NIGHT before our program. Many ideas popped up, but it just didn’t fit the flow of the program. I wanted something that the participants can take away, something that’s simple (but not so simple) for them to hopefully incorporate in their culture as well. At every program we always have to do reflection/debriefing. Question is, how often do we actually reflect & take away whatever was said during debrief? So that’s the story of how I decided to do “Acknowledgements” for their closing. That’s the “race”, now here comes the “amazing” part. This is my 1st time leading a Race of this scale. It’s not very big, but not very small either. The “biggest” I’ve done is a Race along Orchard Road. 1st time I have a team of 16/17 year olds working alongside with me as Facilitators. 1st time I’m doing a race for teachers. 1st time doing a program not for any other school, but for my school. The very school that sparked my interest in Outdoor Adventure. As you can see, there’s a lot of 1st time for me as well. Thankfully I am blessed with an Amazing T.E.A.M of SJC Alumni - Clarice, Cheryl, Choc, Jessica, Nerissa, Kristy, Carmen, Ting Yen, Tania & Si Hui. Like any other program that we’ve ran as LTC. These girls really took the time & effort to ensure that everything ran as smooth as possible. They initially felt awkward without having to write minutes or proposals. (In the end they did write mins!). Each time Tania sent me an email, she'll always end off with "if it's not good. Let me know i can redo". Tania, Si hui & Kristy even went down to their Station venue the DAY before the race to run through everything. Nerissa & Carmen were so worried that they’ll forget their lines. Nerissa concerned with being unable to pronounce the word “sheet” clearly. Jessica & Choc went back to their Wet Weather Plan venue to check & double check that it’s good enough to hold their activity. The night before the program, I found myself composing a really long text message reminding them of thousand & 1 things! As I was composing the SUPER long text, I realize something, that I too had to Trust the Process & STEP BACK. So guess what? I deleted the super long message and said, "remember to bring your logs. Have an early night, and i'll see you promptly at 11.30am". These girls are trained, passionate, responsible and trustworthy leaders. This race also gave me the opportunity to witness people like Choc, Kristy, Jessica,Tania & Sihui in action. To see how much they’ve grown since LTC 08, and more importantly, how much potential they have. I didn’t get to see this side of them during 2009’s Sec 1 Orientation. In the words of Choc “better late than never”. To our Alumni T.E.A.M – WELL DONE!!!!!! And Thank You! Without your effort, we won’t have achieved this success. To the upcoming Alumni – We have set the standard, and I believe you will deliver something of the same, if not higher quality. Yes, I believe you can Raise the Bar! To the rest of LTC – I hope this Chapter of our LTC journey will inspire you to want to come back and run programs for our school. Not only for the future students of SJC, but for the teachers as well. So, this is the story of our Amazing Race, ran together by an Amazing T.E.A.M… Camellia Wong SJC LTC Alumni Facilitator |
